  • We wanted to develop an instrument that made everything else used by an electrician feel much more comfortable and easy to use than they did before. The design is so clean and functional that it manages to make something very complex look very simple, but it won’t cross our users’ minds that design has been involved in developing the product. There are no buried functions which mean it’s obvious how to use it and it features colour-coded ranges to help test selection and reduce testing time. A user guide in the lid provides all the basic information. At the customers’ request it’s also designed to take the bashing that meters receive on site.”

  • In the development of this product we feel that we are taking a bold step by forcing the issue and bringing about a seed change in the traditionally very conservative instrumentation sector. Function and price are still the key “must have” factors but I believe that if we can also give our customers a sexy looking product then that will also become a key aspirational attribute. DesignEdge’s in-depth understanding of manufacturing and engineering allowed it to work alongside Michell like an extension to the engineering team. DesignEdge got on with the ‘real’ design as soon as possible rather than producing reams of heavily stylised but wholly impractical sketches. I prefer that way of working and think that the results speak for themselves.”

  • The product utilises patented precision measurement technology and is aimed at the high-end dental CADCAM market, the aesthetics needed to reflect this as a ground breaking product. It was the look of the product that drew visitors to the stand at its launch in Cologne. Customers found it appealing and eye catching and its design became quite a talking point. When Renishaw began developing the product, design was high on the list of requirements. We wanted a design that brought attention grabbing aesthetics to the product.”

  • This is an exciting and innovative project which could possibly revolutionise the sewerage industry. Being able to cheaply, accurately and reliably measure the range of flows that go on inside sewer pipes has up until now not been economically possible. However, this innovative bit of kit, which utilises microwave technology and has nothing invasive in the bore, can measure flows as low as 0.20 l/s equivalent to the tiniest trickle in the invert of the pipe, up to virtually full bore flows.”

  • The requirements for an attractive looking and robust product even goes down to the inside of the unit. The unit is aesthetically pleasing but maintains its core functionality that fits into a wide variety of deployments. If customers look inside they are usually very impressed, every fine detail has been planned meticulously. If people go on tour of a car plant or if it appears on TV great design promotes a strong brand.” The applications are limitless and Ubisense is now looking to use the technology to help early stage dementia sufferers.

  • Our product range has evolved through acquisition so had a very disparate look. Our latest launch, our biggest ever, gave us the opportunity to put some design thought into the range and then follow it through everything we do. Although our products are for industrial use it’s important that they look like the ground-breaking pieces of engineering that they are. DesignEdge’s great understanding of our sector and also the way they bring good looks into a design – often pushing the boundaries further than we would have considered in-house – has resulted in a fantastic looking range of which we can definitely be proud and stand out from the competition.”

  • DesignEdge has helped us to develop a simple and stylish production unit integrating a compact lens tilting mechanism. Their in-depth knowledge of the latest moulding processes and their expertise in design for manufacture has helped us create a business product that is intuitive and easy to use. DesignEdge has provided a first class service and a winning result and I would not hesitate to recommend their design services.”

  • Although the modulator is a component that ultimately ends up buried inside a cellular or WiMAX base station, the aesthetic design is still important since we want the product, and Nujira’s brand to be easily and readily identifiable. It could be just another boring component and the extra effort to make the design aesthetically pleasing is definitely worthwhile. This is where DesignEdge’s knowledge of mechanics, materials and manufacturing techniques helps. While design can be the main priority with consumer products there are restrictions on more technical products, this type of design has very stringent cost, quality and technical objectives that must be met. The customers for the Nujira product are the world’s leading mobile infrastructure vendors who are working in a very competitive industry with very demanding customers; the network operators. Product reliability is very important and the thermal and mechanical design of the product directly influences this.”

Stirling Essex | Project Manager | Nujira
  • Working with Design Edge on the development of the Rocket™ has delivered our second award-winning instrument design. The eye-catching design is memorable and iconic, gaining a high degree of product and brand recognition in the market. The ergonomics of the system are superb, delivering ease of use and comfortable operation. The integration between the team at Design Edge and our in-house engineers was effective and efficient, with drawings, plans and images delivered on time, and taking into account product and cost constraints inherent in the project. Design Edge is a great development partner and our “secret weapon” in product innovation.”

  • Most of our competitors have very functional looking equipment, at Carl Zeiss we decided to inject some clear styling to improve the aesthetics and enhance the high end brand positioning. Styling is becoming more important for scientific equipment, although some companies remain cautious and conservative because too radical a design will limit one’s market potential. What we have produced is bolder and the design is seen to be quite different from the other equipment in the market. Being a strong design a number of people have commented that the equipment would definitely be on the visitor tours carried out by the MD or senior staff.”
