  • We have made educational robots for 30 years, longer than any other company. With our latest Roamer the challenge was to bring our experience and creativity together within state-of-the art technology. In these situations the challenge is to ensure the design quality matches the vision. DesignEdge met that challenge going further, adding value to the concept with excellent detailed design. The devil is always in the detail and here they were exceptional, we are moulding some components to tolerances that moulders claimed impossible.”

  • Until very recently the external design wasn’t an important factor in the marketplace. Customers just wanted to know whether a product functionally did the job it was supposed to. No one worried about what it looked like, but now there’s much more emphasis on the external design, particularly in Europe. DesignEdge wasn’t so close to the old products, so their team could see the design process with a fresh pair of eyes. Looks aren’t everything, but they do help. It’s not like producing a car, where the design could double the market for a product, but the external design could certainly help us achieve another few percent. Whereas functionality and price were previously the only areas of interest, design definitely does come into it now when buyers are choosing products.”

  • Design for us is as important as functionality. We manufacture premium end inkjet printers and want to produce products that are stylish and have a distinctive feel. Design is important to us but this isn’t the case industry wide. Many companies still see cutting out design as a way to cut costs. But with stylish products on the market this can only be to our advantage”

  • Our aim was to produce a design that was visually striking and that maximized performance for the user. Because the foot was replacing something that was ergonomic and felt natural to use, i.e. a real foot, the design had to be unobtrusive and intuitive, giving the user back their ability to walk normally without the hassle from a hard to operate product. We are delighted that the resulting design has won this prestigious award.” The Red Dot design awards have been running since 1955 and are one of the biggest and most renowned design competitions in the world.

  • Our product range has evolved through acquisition so had a very disparate look. Our latest launch, our biggest ever, gave us the opportunity to put some design thought into the range and then follow it through everything we do. Although our products are for industrial use it’s important that they look like the ground-breaking pieces of engineering that they are. DesignEdge’s great understanding of our sector and also the way they bring good looks into a design – often pushing the boundaries further than we would have considered in-house – has resulted in a fantastic looking range of which we can definitely be proud and stand out from the competition.”

Robert Pulford | Group Development Director | Domino Printing Sciences
  • Design is very important when you are pioneering a new market and we feel this new design represents a step-change for our product. The many different applications for Series 7000 have meant the tag needs to be as widely applicable as possible. By working with DesignEdge we have achieved a distinctive design that is flexible but still attractive.” The tags won the inaugural Best British Inside iaward which celebrate the forefront of British science, technology and innovation. DesignEdge was recognised with the Ubisense Strategic Supplier Award.

  • Good design is now a lot more important to opticians, due to the competition. It’s now good to have nice looking equipment to let customers know that you provide a quality service. Our equipment now fits in nicely with the other equipment that opticians have in their practice. It’s been very well received in the industry. In fact so much so that we are now looking to modify other products using the techniques we have learned. I really believe it is the best union of form and function.”
