The Össur Proprio™ Foot, the world’s first intelligent prosthetic foot, has won the Life Science and Medicine category of the Red Dot International Design Awards. The product was chosen from 4000 entries from 60 countries. The foot uses on-board technology to respond and adjust automatically to different terrains, from walking on level ground to ascending stairs. DesignEdge worked closely with the client Össur’s engineering team in Iceland to ensure this product looked striking, was comfortable to use and still maintained the necessary high levels of precision and performance the end users would demand from it.

Our aim was to produce a design that was visually striking and that maximized performance for the user. Because the foot was replacing something that was ergonomic and felt natural to use, i.e. a real foot, the design had to be unobtrusive and intuitive, giving the user back their ability to walk normally without the hassle from a hard to operate product. We are delighted that the resulting design has won this prestigious award.” The Red Dot design awards have been running since 1955 and are one of the biggest and most renowned design competitions in the world.
