  • We wanted to develop an instrument that made everything else used by an electrician feel much more comfortable and easy to use than they did before. The design is so clean and functional that it manages to make something very complex look very simple, but it won’t cross our users’ minds that design has been involved in developing the product. There are no buried functions which mean it’s obvious how to use it and it features colour-coded ranges to help test selection and reduce testing time. A user guide in the lid provides all the basic information. At the customers’ request it’s also designed to take the bashing that meters receive on site.”

  • Until very recently the external design wasn’t an important factor in the marketplace. Customers just wanted to know whether a product functionally did the job it was supposed to. No one worried about what it looked like, but now there’s much more emphasis on the external design, particularly in Europe. DesignEdge wasn’t so close to the old products, so their team could see the design process with a fresh pair of eyes. Looks aren’t everything, but they do help. It’s not like producing a car, where the design could double the market for a product, but the external design could certainly help us achieve another few percent. Whereas functionality and price were previously the only areas of interest, design definitely does come into it now when buyers are choosing products.”

  • This has huge applicability in the future of augmented reality as there are many situations where video information would be distracting (e.g. driving a car or walking in a busy area), but we can easily cope with audio input. Applications range from assisted living/well-being for the elderly, to productivity enhancement at work, to gaming and exploration. X-Aura was recently launched to considerable success at the International CES Exhibition, a global consumer electronics and consumer technology trade show that takes place in Las Vegas.

  • I have worked with DesignEdge on a number of projects over a number of years and have always found them to be not only very professional but able to produce innovative and stylish designs. Our first project, the PalmScope, proved highly successful and I’m sure the design and styling of the injection moulded casing played its part in that success. Our next project, the Personal Video Assistant (PVA) is still at a relatively early stage of maturity but DesignEdge has taken the plastic casing design to a new level with very fine tolerances. I will have no hesitation in going back to them for future designs.”

  • Most of our competitors have very functional looking equipment, at Carl Zeiss we decided to inject some clear styling to improve the aesthetics and enhance the high end brand positioning. Styling is becoming more important for scientific equipment, although some companies remain cautious and conservative because too radical a design will limit one’s market potential. What we have produced is bolder and the design is seen to be quite different from the other equipment in the market. Being a strong design a number of people have commented that the equipment would definitely be on the visitor tours carried out by the MD or senior staff.”

  • The company was announced as the winner in the Consumer Product Design category at the Design Week Awards, in recognition of the design of its wireless home monitoring and security service. To have our team’s efforts at making objects of desire of home security and energy management recognized by these highly acclaimed awards is absolutely thrilling. Receiving equal status with the Apple MacBook Air at the Design Week Awards is praise indeed! Our thanks go to our industrial designers DesignEdge, for a truly cracking job.”

  • We engaged DesignEdge Cambridge Ltd over the course of three iterations of our in-ear headsets (our Biometric headset, Qualcomm TrueWireless Earbuds and sports wired version of the Qualcomm TrueWireless Earbuds). Our engagement lasted several months and resulted in the production of three form factors for our projects for our internal use during which time DesignEdge provided us with extremely valuable technical guidance, design help and support for our projects. We unveiled the headsets at CES in January 2018 and they have since received positive recognition in the market”

  • This is an exciting and innovative project which could possibly revolutionise the sewerage industry. Being able to cheaply, accurately and reliably measure the range of flows that go on inside sewer pipes has up until now not been economically possible. However, this innovative bit of kit, which utilises microwave technology and has nothing invasive in the bore, can measure flows as low as 0.20 l/s equivalent to the tiniest trickle in the invert of the pipe, up to virtually full bore flows.”

Matt Wheeldon | Head of Wastewater Strategy | Wessex Water
  • Our product range has evolved through acquisition so had a very disparate look. Our latest launch, our biggest ever, gave us the opportunity to put some design thought into the range and then follow it through everything we do. Although our products are for industrial use it’s important that they look like the ground-breaking pieces of engineering that they are. DesignEdge’s great understanding of our sector and also the way they bring good looks into a design – often pushing the boundaries further than we would have considered in-house – has resulted in a fantastic looking range of which we can definitely be proud and stand out from the competition.”
