Key Objectives

Oxford Optronix is a global pioneer in the design, development and manufacture of sophisticated instrumentation for the life sciences. Their scanner imager is a leading colony counter and additional statistics for cancer biologists and life scientists. DesignEdge was tasked with reconceptualising the design language with an eye-catching aesthetic to clearly define market differentiation while emphasizing its advanced technological capabilities in scanning and imaging for bench scientists and biologists. To augment the user experience ergonomics should be a key consideration with careful exploration of product architecture to create a highly compact, space efficient footprint without sacrificing any of the advanced imaging technology.

Result

The colony or spheroid formation assay formation is the reference method for the quantification of anti-cancer regimes on mammalian cell viability in vitro. Manual processing of the resulting samples is laborious, time-limiting and subjective. GelCount™ 2 is an imager and software platform that automates the detection and analysis of colonies, spheroids, and organoids, while providing ‘machine’ level objectivity. DesignEdge worked with engineering and marketing to implement new technical features and make the design as user-centric as possible. The distinctive industrial design, faster processing technology, more intuitive software and ultimate usability brings GelCount™ 2 to the forefront of laboratory instrumentation design.

The advanced industrial design promotes a fresh, unobtrusive yet dynamic identity with clean lines and easy wipe down surfaces. DesignEdge detailed a full suite of enclosure parts for volume production through design research, prototyping and supply chain integration.

Feature 2

User-centered design focuses on ergonomics making sure that the product is easy to handle, interact with and position incorporating integrated handle grips for easier adjustments. The LED light strip pulsates and indicates various scanning phases improving usability and user interaction.

GelCount™ 2 is an integrated solution for the imaging, detection and characterization of adherent or 3-dimensional colonies, spheroids or organoids on a single integrated hardware and accompanying PC software platform for cancer biologists and life scientists.

Feature 4

Easy access sample loading method via a removable loading tray within a software-controlled motorized drawer. Images multi-well plates (6, 12, 24, 48 and 96) and 35, 50 and 100 mm Petri dishes, with or without lids and compatibility with T25 flasks.
