What We Delivered
British company Thermoteknix Systems Ltd is one of the world’s leading developers and manufacturers of infrared (IR) thermal imaging systems and thermal measurement based hardware and software application products. DesignEdge was commissioned by Thermoteknix to showcase its ground-breaking, top of the range TiCAM® 750 series of thermal imaging binoculars for use in reconnaissance, border security, target acquisition, counter drug operations, police surveillance, force protection and general situational awareness in the field. The challenge was to meet Military Specification MIL-STD-810F and design a high specification night vision binocular that would be super compact, extremely rugged, easy-to-use, handheld and packed with an array of the latest optical technologies and features.
Result
DesignEdge used its wealth of expertise and moulding know-how to design TiCAM 750’s ergonomic, clamshell enclosure with anti-shock rubber over-mouldings making it waterproof and protects the camera in the harshest of environments, even floating in water. The combination of TiCAM’s class-leading thermal imaging core and high-end germanium 75mm lens with diamond-like coating delivers the sharpest imagery in a super tough package. Functions include electronic focus and digital zoom, edge detection, Digital Magnetic Compass, GPS, external video output and up to 8 hours operation in normal use from 4 x AA rechargeable batteries. TiCAM 750 is a long range thermal bi-ocular that is handheld or tripod mounted and can detect a man up to a maximum range of 2750m.

TiCAM 750 - Thermal Imaging Binocular Camera
Waterproof - Rugged - Reliable
DesignEdge closely worked with the Thermoteknix design team to create a compact, lightweight, low power, high quality thermal imager for use in the harshest security, surveillance and defence environments. Early foam protoypes were sculpted to optimise and fine tune the ergonomics so the imager perfectly fitted the user's hands (with and without gloves) and tightly profiled around the face, while all the controls are within easy reach. Concepts designs were explored and quickly taken into CAD models and the rugged rubber overmoulded parts were detailed for volume production, using FEA simulation to make sure the fit between parts would meet IP rated seals. The result is a lightweight housing with anti-shock rubber overmoulding armour to meet Military Specification MIL-STD-810F delivering exceptional image quality within a discreet, finely honed design.
Long-range handheld thermal imager
TiCAM 750 is an easy-to-use, rugged, long-range thermal imaging bi-ocular delivering exceptional image quality ideal for a wide range of civil and military mobile surveillance operations including capability for evidence recording. The dual OLED displays and electronic motorised focus ensures maximum comfort during long periods of surveillance. TiCAM 750 supports man detection at distance in excess of 2,900m, meeting the needs of police, security and military applications for general night-time situational awareness. Thermoteknix holds the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation in recognition of its outstanding achievements in thermal imaging.
DIGITAL ZOOM
TiCam® 750 delivers the highest quality thermal imagery with an array of features in a high-spec package and can operate for 8 hours on 4 x AA batteries, weighing less than 2kg it features a high resolution 640×480 detector with 17µ pitch and will detect a man up to a maximum range of 2750m.
ERGONOMIC DESIGN
An easy-to-use, rugged, long-range thermal imaging bi-ocular with adjustable hand straps to maximise user comfort. The dual OLED displays and electronic motorised focus ensures maximum comfort during long periods of surveillance.
RANGE EXTENDER
An optional accessory x2 removable lens doubler extends the effective focal length to 150mm, giving man detection up to 6,000m. A quick-fit mechanism allows the extender lens to be attached or removed within a few seconds.
IMAGE RECORDING
60,000 still images or 8 hours of video can be captured and stored on the TiCAM 750 internal memory card and can be downloaded via USB.
INTERNAL COMPASS
Using a highly accurate GPS and Digital Magnetic Compass (DMC) the TiCAM 750 allows the user to display current location and direction of observation within the device. This information can also be recorded on any images or videos captured.
ERGONOMIC FACE CUP
The soft rubber eye-piece has been carefully profiled to gently cup around the user’s eyes with or without glasses.
