What We Delivered

Key Objectives

Olympus is a global medical technology company, delivering best-in-class solutions and services for early detection, diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment, aiming to improve patient outcomes by elevating the standard of care in targeted disease states. The design brief was to develop a high volume, single use medical grade disposable product for the capture of polyps during a colonoscopy procedure. The design must be innovative, low cost to manufacture and improve the visibility over existing products.

Result

Our design team design, developed and detailed an ingenious patented polyp trap designed to attach to the suction port of an endoscope and capture excised material by applying suction through the biopsy channel. The device then transforms into a specimen transport container. Wide-Eye™ PolypTrap features a unique transparent lid design with an inbuilt magnifying lens and upright positioning that provides enhanced visualization and verification of the smallest trapped polyp. Installation takes just seconds to minimise loss of suction and an easy pull lid accesses the polyp.

“We have been working closely with DesignEdge for a number of years to develop innovative medical products for identifying precancerous lesions in screening colonoscopy. DesignEdge has a highly experienced team dedicated to creating novel solutions to difficult problems. Their approach of combining thought provoking simple and beautiful designs that can be mass produced for a worldwide market is why we has chosen them for all our design work.”

Feature 1

The central moulding rotates and captures polyps in one smooth procedure. The magnifier can be easily removed to quickly retrieve captured polyps whilst still maintaining suction when during use.

Feature 2

The central trap moulding uses an innovative sieve cavity to capture the polyp whilst still allowing the suction to work without trap engagement.

Feature 3

The top acts as a lens allowing polyps to be magnified simultaneously. Wide-Eye PolypTrap is the only rotary trap allowing top viewing making it highly visible and functional during procedures.

Feature 4

The unique valve system allows for both trap and through suction engagement. Both suction and exit tubes come from the base allowing for generous visibility from the top.
