What We Delivered

Key Objectives

VR has come a long way since its inception, yet current headsets still face a number of design issues which detracts from the overall experience. DisplayLink approached us with the challenge of designing a headset which would solve these issues and ultimately feels like it’s not there, allowing for a fully immersive VR experience. This presents a number of challenges, primarily in that existing VR headsets require a tethered connection which inhibits movement. What’s more, such a solution needed to carefully balance thermal management, manufacturability, functionality and performance, all within a seamless, ergonomic design.

Result

We generated a number of early designs to communicate a clear understanding of the specific needs of the client, both in terms of the requirements for the headset as well as manufacturing processes. The resulting design allows for an elegant headset that delivers a game-changing VR experience, allowing for uninhibited movement and the possibility for multiple simultaneous users, in effect revolutionising the VR experience. The headset unlocks a host of potential applications in gaming, simulation, education and commerce. Users can run, jump, duck and dive in a fully immersive, cable-free environment.

“The considerable knowledge and experience of the team at DesignEdge allowed the concept to quickly evolved into a fully functional reference design fit for small volume production. The product has gone on to be the centre stage attraction at our stand at CES 2018 and helped promote wireless VR.”
